The Wedgwood company has been an international business for over 240 years. Founded in 1759, by a Staffordshire-born potter named Josiah Wedgwood - who later became known as the 'Father of English Potters' - upon the highest standards of design, craftsmanship and quality, Wedgwood continues to uphold these essential factors in maintaining its leading position throughout the world.
Wedgwood's greatest contribution to the British pottery industry was the production of the first cream-coloured earthenware. Later called Queen's Ware by Royal assent of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III in 1765, this inexpensive earthenware put fine, beautiful tableware within reach of a much wider range of consumers.
